Introduction

Programme Objectives

  • To provide comprehensive training in theoretical and applied aspects of Entomology for those intending to pursue careers in the related areas, research and / or academia.
  • To produce graduates who will contribute to policy development through advisory services.
  • To produce graduates who are resourceful, creative and able to apply knowledge into entrepreneurial undertakings for generation of wealth and improved food security.
  • To produce graduates who will be able to apply the acquired knowledge towards realization of the Millennium Development Goals and Vision 2030.
  • To produce graduates who will help in the improvement of Agriculture which is one of the pillars in Kenyan Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Justification/Rationale

The programme seeks to provide practical and professional expertise needed for the learning of appropriate scientific principles and practices of agriculture. Maximization of crop yield per unit area is only possible with proper technologies and understanding of basic requirements for healthy crops. Thus, the program incorporates entomology units in order to make students who graduate from the program become agents of change in addressing the emerging issues on the pests and their impact on food security and Nutrition.

The Master of Science in Crop Protection (Entomology Option) programme will enable students to adequately specialize and use the acquired knowledge to augment the national effort to achieve vision on food security before 2030. It will also help in addressing the Kenyan Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

Entry Requirements

The common regulations for admission into the Masters Degrees in Kenyatta University shall apply.

  • The general regulations for all Masters Degrees in the SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURE AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES shall apply.
  • Holders of a Bachelor’s degree with at least a First Class or Upper Second class Honour’s in Agriculture or any other related areas from all institutions recognized by Kenyatta University Senate.
  • Holders of Bachelor’s degree with Lower Second Class Division in Agriculture or any other related areas with at least two years’ relevant research experience or a post-graduate diploma.
  • Mode and structure of delivery

The Master’s programme will be through face to face, virtual and open learning, and blended learning. Blended learning will be at least 40%.

Programme duration

The program will take a minimum of 18 months.

In the first year of study, the students will be required to take a total of 12 units.

In the second year of study, the students will carry out research and will be evaluated through proposal write-up and presentation, submit a thesis for examination, defense, and publication of at least one manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal
