Dr. Hauke-Peter Vehrs is an Assistant Professor, University of Cologne. He is the Programme Coordinator for Culture and Environmental Anthropology in the Department of Culture and Social Anthropology. In his research work, he has collaborated with African researchers in the A04 project, including Kenyatta University through Dr. Peter Wangai, Department of Environmental Studies & Community Development, School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences.
The A04: Future conservation project under the "Future Rural Africa" collaborative research centre (CRC) funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) was aimed at investing a broad allay of conservation topics.
Therefore, a fieldwork documentary was aired on 21st August 2025 from 9am-12.30 noon at  BSSC Room 14, Kenyatta University. Kenyatta University students from the Department of Environmental Studies and Community Development, Department of Environmental Science and Education, and Department of Communication, Theatre and Filming participated. Staff members from the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, and especially from the 3 departments joined the seminar.
The documentary emphasized that fieldwork assistants play a key role in linking researchers to the community members, and in dampening the tension between researchers and the community members who meet as strangers for the first time.
Research findings must also aim at benefitting the community. Dissemination of findings to policy makers is one way of transferring knowledge to practice through the interventions by the government and other development partners.
Sometimes, field research experience criticism and rejection, but with a good local team, solutions are found. Field research has to deal with over-expectations by making everything clear in the beginning - including the role of the researcher and community members.
Any field research should help research assistants in building/advancing their career, either by acquiring a professional/academic certificate or securing available jobs within or outside the research network.
In documentary and film-making, collective and personal consent must be sought, and also ensure that all ethical  considerations are adhered to.
