On 12th March,2024, Brigadier Hillary Biwott Kipkosgey, the Director General, Kenya Space agency (KSA) (in a white polo T-shirt) and his team were hosted by Dr. Benjamin Danga, Deputy Executive Dean (in tie), the staff, and students at
Kitui Campus during their visit to the Campus to inspect the progress of KSA Projects at the Campus comprised of construction of a container
to host the Optical Observatory telescope (at the back ground) and the successfully drilled water borehole as a Corporate Social Responsibility to KU’s Kitui Campus Community.

The department of Animal Sciences was established in the year 2016 in the School of agriculture and Enterprise Development (SAED) and is currently two degree offering programmes: Bachelor of Animal Health and Production, and Master of Science in Animal Nutrition and Management. The main objectives of the department are to train and equip students with knowledge and skills to contribute to increased animal production in Kenya to meet the demands of the rapidly increased human population.

Teaching Resources

  • Well-equipped laboratories
  • The Science section in the KU Postmodern Library has been equipped books on Animal Health and Production and also has numerous online information resources
  • Easily accessible internet facilities are available for training and research
  • Teaching Farm located on a 80 acre piece of land with facilities for holding various animal species including a dairy unit, Piggery, poultry Unit and a fish farm
  • The Department facilities have been inspected on two occasions by the Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB) which is regulatory body for animal health training and practice in Kenya, and approved for animal Health and Production training

Staff and staff development
The department has a team of experienced full time staff ranging from Associate Professors to Lecturers, with competencies in training and research in the following broad areas:

  • Animal Health
  • Animal Production
  • Staff from other specialised university departments provide support in teaching units in Agribusiness, Rural Sociology and Development, Agricultural extension, among others

The Department has on-going research on:

  • Poultry nutrition
  • Indigenous chicken production and marketing
  • Effect of aflatoxicosis in poultry
  • Dairy goat production
