Introduction
Programme Objectives
- To produce graduates with broad knowledge and understanding of Agronomy with a specific emphasis on crop production and agroecology.
- To promote the professional development of graduates in agriculture by providing the students with hands-on experience in the different disciplines within the realm of Agronomy, soil health, and climate change.
- To produce graduates with the required skills for carrying out further research and development in plant nutrition.
Justification/Rationale
The programme seeks to provide practical and professional expertise needed for the learning of appropriate scientific principles and practices of agriculture. Maximization of crop yield per unit area is only possible with proper technologies and understanding of basic requirement for healthy crops. Thus, the programme incorporates basic education and extension courses in order to make students who graduate from the program agents of change. The Master of Science in Agronomy programme will enable students to adequately specialize and use the acquired knowledge to augment the national effort to achieve vision on food security before 2030.
Entry Requirements
The common regulations for admission into the Masters Degrees in Kenyatta University shall apply.
- The general regulations for all Masters Degrees in the School of Agriculture and Environmental Studies shall apply.
- Holders of a Bachelors degree with at least a First Class or Upper Second class Honours in Agriculture or any other related areas from all institutions recognized by Kenyatta University Senate.
- Holders of Bachelors degree with a Lower Second Class Division in Agriculture or any other related areas with at least two years of relevant research experience or a post-graduate diploma.
Mode and structure of delivery
The Master’s programme will be through face to face, virtual and open learning, and blended learning. Blended learning will be at least 40%.
Programme duration
The Master of Science degree in Agronomy is by coursework, examination, and thesis.
The program will take a minimum of 18 months.
In the first year of study, the students will be required to take a total of 12 units.
In the second year of study, the students will carry out research and will be evaluated through proposal write-up and presentation, submit a thesis for examination, defense, and publication of at least one manuscript in a peer-reviewed journal
