  • To produce graduates who will help in the improvement of Agriculture sector development goals of the Kenyan Government.

Justification/Rationale

Food security and sovereignty are persistent national development challenges that impact many other sectors of human well-being. Globally and nationally, agricultural development needs to guarantee availability of quality crop and animal products and services within and between generations. The Kenya Vision 2030, the African Union Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals aim to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable development.

Evidence shows that plant diseases are among the major contributors to declining yields and food insecurity. The MSc Crop protection (plant pathology option) programme aims to contribute to achieving the above national, continental and global aspirations and development goals. Furthermore, the revision of the MSc programme curriculum is informed by the output of a stakeholders meeting involving representatives of industry, faculty and students. The stakeholder consultation meeting identified the need for a revamped curriculum in particular to strengthen linkages with industry.
